Dry stone walling is an ancient craft which dates back to prehistoric times. Some of the earliest examples can be found on Orkney Brae in Scotland dating back some 4000 years.
Dry stone walling has a natural beauty and exists in harmony with the natural environment. It can also be a habitat for wildlife. Dry stone walls are extremely durable and a well built wall will last for hundreds of years.
Stone lends itself very well to building with mortar once you understand where an when to use each stone. The results can be very long-lasting and pleasing to the eye. Mortar also be used so the wall looks dry and lime mortar will last longer and allow for slight movement and moisture.
